A milestone birthday. A golden anniversary. A retirement after forty years. A naming day for a new arrival. These are the moments a family gathers for, and they deserve more than a cake and a speech. A private sand art performance tells the story of the person, the couple, or the family — drawn live, in front of everyone who matters, ending on an image made only for them.
Any milestone with a story behind it is a candidate for a sand art performance. The most popular are:
| Occasion | The story it tells |
|---|---|
| Milestone birthdays | A life drawn in scenes — 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th and beyond. The journey of the person being celebrated. |
| Anniversaries | Silver, ruby, golden — the story of a marriage, from the wedding day to the present. |
| Retirements | A career honoured — the achievements, the people, the legacy left behind. |
| Naming days & christenings | A welcome for a new life, often weaving in family heritage and hopes for the future. |
| Family reunions | A shared history drawn live — generations, journeys, the story of where a family came from. |
This is what makes it a gift rather than a performance. Before the event, I work — often secretly, with the family organising the surprise — to gather the details that matter: the places someone has lived, the people they love, the achievements they are proud of, the small running jokes that define them. I then design a 6 to 12 minute narrative that belongs to no one else on earth.
The most powerful moment is almost always recognition — when the guest of honour realises the story unfolding in sand is their own. There is usually a gasp, and then there are usually tears.
The performance scales to your setting. I have performed for a private dinner of a dozen people around one table, and for celebrations of two hundred or more in banquet halls. For smaller, intimate gatherings the setup is discreet and close; for larger events I use larger or dual projection screens so every guest has a clear view. Tell me the size and style of your event and I will design the right setup.
Usually with the family member planning the surprise. We gather the story, the photos in words, the details that matter.
I storyboard the narrative and choose music that fits the person and the mood.
The full performance is choreographed and rehearsed to the second.
On the day, the guest of honour watches their own life appear in light and sand, surrounded by the people who love them.
Private celebrations start from £450. The final figure depends on performance length and the complexity of the story. Every quote includes consultation, bespoke design, rehearsal, all equipment, travel within 60 miles of Worksop, and a recording of the performance to keep and share with family who could not attend.
Very often it is. I work discreetly with whoever is planning the celebration and arrive set up before the guest of honour realises what is coming.
That is completely normal. In our consultation I ask the right questions to draw out the meaningful moments. You will be surprised how much story emerges.
Yes. If there is a song that means something to the person or family, I will choreograph the performance to it. Otherwise I will suggest pieces that fit.
Often yes. I need a little space, a surface to project onto, and some control of the lighting. Send me the details and I will confirm.

Tell me who you are celebrating, the occasion and the date. I will reply within 24 hours with availability and a bespoke quote.
