What is sand art?

Live performance, drawn by hand.

Sand art is a live visual performance. Working over a backlit glass table, I draw with my hands, pouring, sweeping and shaping fine sand into images that flow seamlessly from one scene into the next.

Projected onto a large screen and set to music, every movement becomes part of a story your audience watches unfold in real time. Nothing is pre-recorded. Each show is created live, in the moment, and never exactly the same twice.

The artist

Meet Bilal Köse

I'm a UK-based professional sand artist with over 15 years of artistic experience, specialising in live sand art performances for events across the country and beyond. As Britain's first established resident sand animation artist, I'm one of very few performing this art form permanently from within the UK, rather than travelling in for one-off bookings.

Each performance is carefully tailored to reflect the message, story or values of the event, transforming a single moment into a memorable visual experience. Alongside sand art I also work with calligraphy and traditional techniques, which add depth and originality to every show.

I regularly perform at universities, theatres, museums, cathedrals, care homes and public venues, and offer educational workshops for children and adults. My goal is simple: to create art that isn't only seen, but truly felt.

I'm based in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and travel for performances across the entire UK, and worldwide for the right event. Travel is simply factored into your quote.
A single live story typically runs 3 to 6 minutes per piece, with the full feature built around your programme. Many events book multiple scenes or a longer set. We'll shape the timing together during the consultation.
I bring my own backlit sand table and camera. Ideally we project onto a large screen or wall so every guest can see the detail clearly, most venues and AV teams can provide this, or I can advise. I just need a small staging area and a power socket.
The earlier the better: bespoke pieces take time to design and rehearse, and weekend dates fill quickly. That said, do get in touch even for short-notice events; I'll always try to help.
For corporate bookings there are two formats that work beautifully together. The Ambient & Interactive format means I'm present at my sand table throughout the event, continuously creating new artwork, drawing brand visuals on request, and personalising pieces for guests. A Pre-Prepared Show is a structured narrative performance, designed in advance around your brand or campaign and performed live for your audience, it runs 15 to 20 minutes and can be staged 2 to 3 times across the evening. Many clients book the Ambient format as their base and add a Pre-Prepared Show as a centrepiece.
Performances start from £450, with personalised story shows from £700 and discounted rates for charities and schools.
